StoryNIGERIA SET TO PLAY CORSICA

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to play the Corsica senior team in an international friendly game after the camp opens in Corsica on May 24.


After the game, they would move to France when there is another camp planned in Paris. The two phases of camping programme is to help the team bond ahead of the crucial African Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa.

Coach Gernot Rohr named 25 players for the games. FC Ifeanyi Ubah goalie Ikechukwu Ezenwa is expected to battle Dele Alampasu of Cesarense, Portugal for goalkeeping action after the first choice Carl Ikeme of Wolverhampton Wanderers was sidelined due to injury.

In defence, FC Porto’s Chidozie Awaziem, Leon Balogun of FSV Mainz 05 in Germany, William Ekong who is with Belgian side KAA Gent, Elderson Echiejile of Sporting Gijon in Spain, Uche Agbo of Granada, Spain, Tyronne Ebuehi who plays in the Netherlands and Abdullahi Shehu who plays in Cyprus for Anorthosis Famagusta,are invited.

Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi earned an invitation. Ogbenekaro Etebo of CD Feirense Portugal was also invited. Hapoel Be’er Sheva star John Ogu, Mikel Agu of Vitoris Setubal, Portugal and Alhassan Ibrahim of Akwa United were also named. Champions League winner John Obi Mikel who plays in China now was excluded from the list.

Leicester City have a second player in the list in Ahmed Musa. Man City star Kelechi Iheanacho and Isaac Success of Watford were also named. Sikiru Olatubosun and Stephen Odey of MFM FC were invited. Moses Simon, who also plays for Gent, Victor Osimhen of Wolfsburg, Olanrewaju Kayode of FC Austria Wien and Noan Serenren-Bazee of Hannover 96 in Germany, are poised to lead the attack.

Chelsea’s Ola Aina and Alex Iwobi of Arsenal are expected to join them after their club commitments. Henry Onyekuru who plays for KAS Eupen in Belgium was subsequently invited after the 25-man list was released. The 19-year old scored 24 goals in all competitions to earn his place in the team.
